Colin Farrell (I)
Colin Farrell is one of Ireland's best rising stars in Hollywood and abroad today. His film presence has been filled with memorable roles that range from an inwardly tortured hit man, to an adventurous explorer, a determined-but-failing writer, and the greatest military leader in history. Farrell was born on May 31, 1976 in Castleknock, Dublin, Ireland, to Rita (Monaghan) and Eamon Farrell. His father and uncle were both professional athletes, and for a while, it looked like Farrell would follow in their footsteps. Farrell auditioned for a part in the Irish Boy Band, Boyzone, but it didn't work out. After dropping out of The Gaiety School of Acting, Farrell was cast in _"Ballykissangel" (1996)_ (qv), a BBC television drama. "Ballykissangel" was not his first role on screen. Farrell had previously been in _The War Zone (1999)_ (qv), directed by 'Tim Roth (I)' (qv) and had appeared in the independent film _Drinking Crude (1997)_ (qv). Farrell was soon to move on to bigger things. Exchanging his usually thick Dublin accent for a light Texas drawl, Farrell acted in the gritty _Tigerland (2000)_ (qv), directed by 'Joel Schumacher' (qv). Starring Farrell amongst a number of other budding young actors, the film portrays a group of new recruits being trained for the war in Vietnam. Farrell played the arrogant soldier Boz, drafted into the army and completely spiteful of authority. The film was praised by critics, but did not make much money at the box office. It was Farrell's first big role on film, and certainly not his last. Farrell followed up with _American Outlaws (2001)_ (qv), where he played the notorious outlaw Jesse James with 'Scott Caan' (qv), son of legendary actor 'James Caan (I)' (qv), in the role of Cole Younger. The film was a box office flop and failure with the critics. Immediately, Farrell returned to the war drama film that had made him famous. Co-starring in the war film _Hart's War (2002)_ (qv) opposite 'Bruce Willis' (qv), Farrell played the young officer captured by the enemy. The film was another failure. Farrell struck gold when he was cast in the 'Steven Spielberg' (qv) film _Minority Report (2002)_ (qv) that same year. Set in a futuristic time period, Farrell played the character of Danny Witwer, a young member of the Justice Department who is sent after 'Tom Cruise' (qv)'s character. The film was a smash hit, and praised by critics. Farrell continued this success when he reunited with 'Joel Schumacher' (qv) on the successful thriller _Phone Booth (2002)_ (qv). Farrell played the role of the victim who is harassed by an unseen killer ('Kiefer Sutherland' (qv)) and is made to reveal his sins to the public. 2003 was a big year for Farrell. He starred in the crime thriller _The Recruit (2003)_ (qv) as a young CIA man mentored by an older CIA veteran ('Al Pacino (I)' (qv)). Pacino later stated that Farrell was the best actor of his generation. Farrell certainly continued to be busy that year with _Daredevil (2003)_ (qv), which actually allowed him to keep his thick Irish accent. The film was another success for Farrell, as was the crime film _S.W.A.T. (2003)_ (qv) where Farrell starred opposite 'Samuel L. Jackson' (qv) and 'LL Cool J' (qv). Farrell also acted in the Irish black comedy film _Intermission (2003)_ (qv) and appeared another Irish film _Veronica Guerin (2003)_ (qv) which reunited him with 'Joel Schumacher' (qv) once again. The following year, Farrell acted in what is his most infamous film role yet: the title role in the mighty 'Oliver Stone (I)' (qv) film epic _Alexander (2004)_ (qv), which is a character study of Alexander the Great as he travels across new worlds and conquers all the known world before him. Farrell donned a blond wig and retained his Irish accent, and gave a fine performance as Alexander. However, both he and the film were criticized. Despite being one of the highest grossing films internationally and doing a good job at the DVD sales, Farrell did not come out of the experience without a few hurts. Farrell attempted to rebound with his historical film _The New World (2005)_ (qv). Reuniting with "Alexander" star 'Christopher Plummer (I)' (qv), and also acting with 'Christian Bale' (qv), Farrell played the character of the brave explorer John Smith, who would make first contacts with the Native peoples. The film did not do well at the box office, though critics praised the film's stunning appearance and cinematography. Farrell returned to act in 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv)'s film _Miami Vice (2006)_ (qv) alongside 'Jamie Foxx' (qv). The film was a film adaptation of the famous television series, and did reasonably well at the box office. Farrell also acted in _Ask the Dust (2006)_ (qv) with 'Salma Hayek' (qv) and 'Donald Sutherland (I)' (qv), though the film did not receive much distribution. The next year, Farrell acted alongside 'Ewan McGregor' (qv) in the 'Woody Allen' (qv) film _Cassandra's Dream (2007)_ (qv) which received mixed reviews from critics. Farrell followed up with the hilarious black comedy _In Bruges (2008)_ (qv). Written and directed by Irish theatre director 'Martin McDonagh' (qv), the film stars Farrell and 'Brendan Gleeson' (qv) as two Irish hit men whose latest assignment went wrong, leaving them to hide out in Bruges, Belgium. The film has been one of Farrell's most praised work, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe. As well as _In Bruges (2008)_ (qv), Farrell acted alongside 'Edward Norton (I)' (qv) in the crime film _Pride and Glory (2008)_ (qv) which was not as successful as the former film. As well as working with charity, and speaking at the Special Olympics World Games in 2007, he has donated his salary for 'Terry Gilliam' (qv)'s _The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)_ (qv) to 'Heath Ledger' (qv)'s little daughter (who was left nothing in a will that had not been updated in time). Ledger had originally been cast in the film and was replaced by Farrell, Johnny Depp, and Jude Law. The film was a critical and financial success, and Farrell also played a small role in _Crazy Heart (2009)_ (qv) which had the Dubliner playing a country singer. Farrell even sang a few songs for the film's soundtrack. As well as those small roles, Farrell took the lead role in the war film _Triage (2009)_ (qv). Farrell incredibly lost forty-four pounds to play the role of a war photographer who must come to terms with what he has experienced in Kurdistan. While the film was finely made, with excellent performances from all involved, the film has received almost no distribution. Farrell's other leading role that year was in 'Neil Jordan (I)' (qv)'s Irish film _Ondine (2009)_ (qv), which had Farrell playing an imaginative fisherman who thinks he has caught a mermaid in his net. Since the mid-2000's, Farrell has cleaned up his act, and far from being a Hollywood hell raiser and party animal, Farrell has shown himself to be a respectable and very talented actor.

Elegant redhead Nicole Kidman, known as one of Hollywood's top Australian imports, was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her Australian parents were there on educational visas. Kidman is the daughter of Janelle Ann (Glenny), a nursing instructor, and Antony David Kidman, a biochemist and clinical psychologist. She is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Washington, D.C., where Nicole's father pursued his research on breast cancer, and then, three years later, made the pilgrimage back to her parents' native Sydney in Australia. Young Nicole's first love was ballet, but she eventually took up mime and drama as well (her first stage role was a bleating sheep in an elementary school Christmas pageant). In her adolescent years, acting edged out the other arts and became a kind of refuge -- as her classmates sought out fun in the sun, the fair-skinned Kidman retreated to dark rehearsal halls to practice her craft. She worked regularly at the Philip Street Theater, where she once received a personal letter of praise and encouragement from audience member 'Jane Campion' (qv) (then a film student). Kidman eventually dropped out of high school to pursue acting full-time. She broke into movies at age 16, landing a role in the Australian holiday favorite _Bush Christmas (1983)_ (qv). That appearance touched off a flurry of film and television offers, including a lead in _BMX Bandits (1983)_ (qv) and a turn as a schoolgirl-turned-protester in the miniseries _"Vietnam" (1987)_ (qv) (for which she won her first Australian Film Institute Award). With the help of an American agent, she eventually made her US debut opposite 'Sam Neill' (qv) in the at-sea thriller _Dead Calm (1989)_ (qv). Kidman's next casting coup scored her more than exposure. While starring as 'Tom Cruise' (qv)'s doctor/love interest in the racetrack romance _Days of Thunder (1990)_ (qv), she won over the Hollywood hunk hook, line and sinker. After a whirlwind courtship (and decent box office returns), the couple wed on December 24, 1990. Determined not to let her new marital status overshadow her fledgling career, the actress pressed on. She appeared as a catty high school senior in the Australian film _Flirting (1991)_ (qv), then as 'Dustin Hoffman' (qv)'s moll in the gangster flick _Billy Bathgate (1991)_ (qv). She reunited with Cruise for _Far and Away (1992)_ (qv), the story of young Irish lovers who flee to America in the late 1800s, and starred opposite 'Michael Keaton' (qv) in the tear-tugger _My Life (1993)_ (qv). Despite her steady employment, critics and moviegoers still had not quite warmed to Kidman as a leading lady. She tried to spice up her image by seducing 'Val Kilmer' (qv) in _Batman Forever (1995)_ (qv), but achieved her real breakthrough with 'Gus Van Sant' (qv)'s _To Die For (1995)_ (qv). As a fame-crazed housewife determined to eliminate any obstacle in her path, Kidman proved that she had an impressive range and deadly comic timing. She took home a Golden Globe and several critics' awards for the performance. In 1996, Kidman stepped into a corset to work with her countrywoman and onetime admirer, 'Jane Campion' (qv), on the adaptation of 'Henry James (I)' (qv)'s _The Portrait of a Lady (1996)_ (qv). A few months later, she tore across the screen as a nuclear weapons expert in _The Peacemaker (1997)_ (qv), adding "action star" to her professional repertoire. She and Cruise then disappeared into a notoriously long, secretive shoot for 'Stanley Kubrick' (qv)'s sexual thriller _Eyes Wide Shut (1999)_ (qv). The couple's on-screen shenanigans prompted an increase in public speculation about their sex life (rumors had long been circulating that their marriage was a cover-up for Cruise's homosexuality); tired of denying tabloid attacks, they successfully sued The Star for a story alleging that they needed a sex therapist to coach them through love scenes. Family life has always been a priority for Kidman. Born to social activists (mother was a feminist; father, a labor advocate), Nicole and her little sister, 'Antonia Kidman' (qv), discussed current events around the dinner table and participated in their parents' campaigns by passing out pamphlets on street corners. When her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, 17-year-old Nicole stopped working and took a massage course so that she could provide physical therapy (her mother eventually beat the cancer). She and Cruise adopted two children: Isabella Jane (born 1993) and Connor Antony (born 1995). Despite their rock-solid image, the couple announced in early 2001 that they were separating due to career conflicts. Her marriage to Cruise ended mid-summer of 2001.
